Around 3:00 am ET, the Australian and the New Zealand currencies lost ground against its US and the Japanese counterparts. At about 3:25 am ET, the Aussie touched a low of 102.12 versus the Yen and 0.8936 against the Greenback. On the other hand, at about 3:30 am ET, the New Zealand dollar hit as low as 0.7469 and 85.34 against its US and the Japanese counterparts respectively.

The yen held against the dollar and euro but eased to the pound in late morning trading Thursday. Traders considered two rate decisions in Europe and comments by Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) Deputy Governor.

Versus the yen, the Swiss currency saw little direction into trading on Thursday. As action moved into the mid-morning, the franc bounced between a high of 99.09 and a low of 98.62. Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Kazumasa Iwata said Thursday that Financial Market turmoil and a U.S. housing market decline resulting from the subprime crisis may pose a real danger to economic growth in Japan.

As widely expected, the European central bank left its key interest rates unchanged at 4.00%. Amid the release, the Euro fell against the Yen, but it advanced versus the rest of majors. At about 7:54 am Eastern Time, the Euro collected 1.4114 against the dollar, 164.57 against the Yen, 0.6937 against the Pound and 1.6637 against the Swiss Franc.

Against the Japanese Yen, the U.K.’s Cable weakened in the Asian deals on Thursday. The Cable touched a low of 236.17 by about 1:45 am Eastern Time. However, during the early European session, the pair reversed the losses and it is currently trading near 237.2.

The Japanese yen is now giving back the early gains. The currency strengthened against the majors in Asian trading Thursday amid economic reports from Japan. However, the yen lost ground against most major currencies during the European deals. As of 6:00 am ET, the dollar-yen pair was worth 116.7, up from an early morning low of 116.4.

After a brief uptrend, the Euro lost ground versus the Japanese Yen during the early Asian deals on Thursday. The euro thus declined from 164.64 to 163.97. The pair then moved sideways, but it reversed the losses in the early European session and advanced further.

The Japanese yen drifted higher against the US dollar in the early Asian deals on Tuesday, and hit as high as 115.45 by about 12.35 am ET. Thereafter, the pair reversed its direction but soon started to move sideways in a loose range. The dollar is now worth 115.56 yen.
